17 Sep 07: About Janet Swisher

I'm a technical writer in Austin, Texas. I've worked in and around IT and software since 1989, and in technical communication since 1999. Currently, I work on developer documentation for Mozilla. (Opinions expressed in this blog are mine, not theirs.) In my career as a technical writer, what I've written ranges online help and tutorials to API documentation and programmer guides. In the past, I've pitched in wherever my employer needed help involving the English language, including web copy and proposals.

My "techie" cred is that I can read code well enough to avoid asking obvious questions, and write code well enough to be dangerous. I can follow programmers' discussions of things like design patterns and algorithmic complexity (if I sit up and pay attention). I can mess with hardware if I have to.

Another major interest of mine is Aikido, which may intrude into this blog from time to time.

I am not the Janet Swisher of the Missouri Pet Breeders Association, though I wish her the best in her endeavors.

If you want to know more about me, see my LinkedIn profile. If you want to know more about what I find interesting, read my shared items from Google Reader.

Hi Janet

Do you know of any open source project that I can contribute to?

I agree with you, it a form of giving back.

I appreciate any information you can give me.

Hi Janet,

I am a writing grad student focusing on tech writing. I would love to interview you (briefly!) if possible as part of my research.

I can keep it as brief as necessary - I understand you must be very busy.

Thank you for the VERY useful site here.

Hi Janet,
Your website caught our attention because we are four Dutch students performing a research regarding authoring tools (mainly about its functionalities and user friendliness). That's why we developed a questionnaire and now we are looking for technical writers who are users or ex-users of Author-it, MAdCap Flare, Doc-to-Help, Help&Manual or RoboHelp, and who are willing to participate in a survey.

I was wondering if you could post a link to our questionnaire on your website (http://www.thesistools.com/...). Of course results of this survey can be shared if you are interested. I hope you can help us!

Thanks in advance. If you have any further questions, please email me!

Kind regards,
Anne
